How Does Laser Hair Removal or IPL Hair Removal Work?

The EpiLight, which is an Intense Pulsed Light, or IPL, works on the same principle as laser hair removal, in which the hair, hair shaft, and hair follicle absorb the energy of the light. This heats the hair follicle and destroys it. For a comparison of IPL and laser hair removal, click here.
 

The EpiLight is FDA approved for permanent, long-lasting hair reduction (removal). We do not call hair removal permanent because it is possible for the body to produce new hair as hair follicles are stimulated to mature, often caused by hormonal changes. The new hair is typically fine, light, and slow to develop. Very fine or light hair will not be effectively treated with EpiLight.

Because hair grows in cycles, it usually takes a minimum of 4 treatments to get rid of your unwanted hair, and may take 5 or more. The response depends on your skin color, and the color, texture, and density of your hair. Treatment occurs at 4 to 6 week intervals.
 

Treatments feel like a rubber band snap, and cooling gel is used for comfort and skin protection. It is necessary that the skin is untanned, and darker skin tones such as African-American are difficult to treat. White, blonde, or gray hair is also very difficult to treat.
 

There is typically no down time associated with treatment. The skin may be pink for a few minutes to a few hours following treatment, and make-up can be applied immediately. It is quite common for patients to return to work immediately after treatment.
